2026 Began With a Reminder of Why We Serve
2026 began with anticipation. Like many, we stepped into the new year energised and ready to take on fresh opportunities and bold goals. But very quickly, the community of Masiphumelele reminded us of something deeper.
It reminded us of why Masicorp exists, to serve and to walk alongside this community when it matters most.
On the 20th of January a strong wind-driven fire swept through Masiphumelele, destroying hundreds of homes and affecting over 1000 people. Families lost their homes, their belongings, and their sense of safety in a matter of hours. The urgency was immediate and overwhelming.
Through Masicorp’s Disaster Fund, we were able to respond swiftly. We donated funds towards Living Hope’s emergency relief efforts and provided hundreds of essential hygiene products to families who suddenly had nothing. The incredible team at Living Hope continues to support those affected, offering care, dignity, and practical assistance in a time of deep loss.
At the same time, another reality surfaced, quieter, but just as urgent.
A week after school’s opened, we received a message shared by Nelisa Dondolo, a parent and concerned community member. She brought our attention to learners at Ukhanyo Primary School arriving at school in broken shoes, torn jerseys, and uniforms far too small for their growing bodies.
These are children who show up every day ready to learn and grow while carrying discomfort and quiet embarrassment into the classroom.
Many of you may know that we work closely with Ukhanyo Primary School. Not only do we provide learning support through our learning labs but we also support parents with uniforms (sewn locally at the Sewing Café) at a very reduced price.
The need was clear and urgent: between 60 and 100 learners required full school uniforms. These are children we know by name. And we believe that dignity in education matters.
We reached out to our direct donors who supports our uniform programmes and through the generosity of an incredible angel donor, 100 uniforms were fully funded. These children can now walk into their classrooms with confidence, comfort, and restored dignity.
Disaster doesn’t always arrive the same way.
Sometimes it comes as fire and loss. Sometimes it arrives quietly, in the everyday struggles families carry. Masicorp’s Disaster Fund exists so we can respond to both, quickly, compassionately, and meaningfully.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who makes this possible. Your support ensures that when Masiphumelele calls we are able to answer.
As we move forward into this year, we remain committed to serve Masiphumelele, to protect dignity, and to show up when it matters most.
If you’d like to send a gift for these kinds of special needs that continue to arise on a daily basis for support or relief, you can do so by donating to our Disaster Fund below. We will make sure your contribution goes to where it’s needed most.
