Congratulations to Ukhanyo Primary sports coaches Nceba Jonas, Teddy Nyali, Feziwe Payi, Pam Ngcwana, Jade Schoeman and Frank Charlie who successfully completed a CATHSSETA accredited skills programme called the Coaching and Administration skills programme through eta.

Last week Masicorp welcomed Nicole Jennings of eta and Ukhanyo Headmaster Michael Thyali to a special ceremony where certificates were handed out to the proud coaches.

eta College is an accredited sport and fitness college and one of the leading education providers in the sport and fitness industry. They have partnered with an NGO called Active Communities Network South Africa (ACN), who use sports education as a tool to build resilient communities and empower youth. They do this by providing educational pathways and employment as well as building capacity in community coaches who are teaching in disadvantaged areas.

The ACN purpose mirrors that of the MCC Masi 750 Sports Club which is to transform the Masiphumelele community through sport and youth. We have found that by working with other NGOs, it expands the opportunities available to school staff, coaches and learners. Coolplay, another NGO partner of ours assisted rugby coach Frank Charlie with an opportunity to take the course.

The Coaching and Administration skills programme is designed to empower local people with workplace communication, organisational and administrative skills. They are also taught how to plan practice coaching sessions while learning about and engaging in various teaching techniques. Through hard work and commitment, our coaches completed both theoretical tasks and practical demonstrations in order to successfully finish the programme. The course expanded the coaches repertoire to Excel, videos in power-point presentations along with structuring coaching sessions and strategies.

Nceba Jonas paid tribute to Nicole for her dedicated work, encouragement and support throughout the course. The mentorship and assistance provided to them was invaluable.

This is an exciting development as this is the start of a new chapter of tertiary education for them all, and we look forward to seeing how they integrate these skills into the sports programme at Ukhanyo Primary.
