Primary School Literacy Support

Recent statistics show that 81% of Grade 4 children in South Africa can’t read for meaning, and 30% of schools lack their own library.

In addition to our work at Ukhanyo Primary School, Masicorp provides literacy support to children from Masiphumelele attending various other local schools, ensuring that children have the language skills necessary to succeed academically.

These efforts, coupled with our school programmes, are working to reverse the literacy crisis in Masiphumelele one child at a time.

English Please

This programme supports 66 learners across Fish Hoek Primary, Simons Town Primary, and Sun Valley Primary. It focuses on developing strong English language skills, essential for academic success. By working closely with learners in small groups, we help build their confidence in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Masifunde

With 147 learners from Ukhanyo Primary School, our Masifunde programme nurtures English language skills in the early stages of primary education. As learners transition from being taught in Xhosa to receiving instruction in English, Masifunde provides much-needed support. The programme offers teaching materials and guidance to ensure that children have the foundation they need to succeed as they progress in school.

Tuesdays with Books

Held at the Masi Library, this initiative engages 31 children in a relaxed environment where they can explore new books, share stories, and foster a love for reading. It encourages reading for pleasure, which is crucial for improving literacy and language development.
