Soccer and netball kit handover to Masiphumelele High School
By Vince van der Bijl
The MCC Masi Sports Project was delighted to handover Masiphumelele HS branded soccer and netball kit for all their teams last week – social distancing included!
Sport and life skills plays a key role in the building of self-belief and self-confidence of the learners. The learners in branded kit feel proud of their school and it gives them a feeling of community and belonging.
Nceba Jonas handed the kit to Mr. Mafrika, Mr. Mlandu and Mr. Stofile. The handover included polo shirts for all coaches and staff members who were involved in sport.
While the handover was unusual with social distancing and masks, the school was ecstatic with the specially designed outfits.
The soccer shirts were funded by Rotary Club, Claremont Branch. Just before lockdown, Vince showed Ken Sturgeon, from Rotary, the first prototype received from Disa Sports. We are so grateful for their support. They play such an important role in assisting the transformation of Masiphumelele.
While official school matches might be some way ahead, the High School now is geared and eager. The two netball courts are up and waiting for post lockdown.
The great news is that the Atlas Foundation, started by Justin Leonard (the most capped English rugby International) is preparing the field at the High School for rugby, soccer and cricket. Head Coach of rugby for the Atlas Foundation, Frank Charlie with Xolani and Yanga, are doing the hard work and they with Foundation aim to put up rugby posts soon. How wonderful will that be?
The MCC Masi project will construct three cricket nets in the fourth term if school sport is allowed. Masiphulelele High school will then be perfectly placed to become a renowned sporting school.
As Sue Anderson, heads up the Foundation operations in South Africa, with John le Roux always says, “Together we can achieve more”. We hope that the government will come to the party at some stage. The School HM and staff, the coaches and the school cannot wait along with the whole of Masiphumelele!
