The MCC Masi 750 Sports Club – progress in 2018
Project leader Vince van der Bijl reports that Nceba, Teddy and the coaches have had a month of high energy and commitment.
Following an outstanding academic year, the school is reaching much improved sport results and increased sports participation too.
A short synopsis of the activities
- 6 coaches enrolled in the ETA sports skills and management one-year course
Nicole Jennings of ETA made special arrangements to mentor the six coaches on the programme during the one-year sports management and skills diploma course by coming regularly to Ukhanyo. The induction and first module has been completed.
- 10 coaches do the KFC mini-cricket coaching course
The WPCA mini-cricket manager, Mark Koabane, has also visited Ukhanyo for two coaching modules to take all our ten coaches through their paces to a KFC mini-cricket coaching certificate. All full and part time coaches took part.
- 31st January – all cricket teams have a 100% win!
We had a day! Our under 11 team playing Kommetjie in their first official inter-schools match won by 19 runs. On the same day both the under 8 and under 9 mini-cricket teams won their matches. A clean sweep.
Our next week’s matches we not that successful – the day was great all the same.
- Life skills workshops fortnightly delivered by Coolplay
NGO Coolplay are throughout the first term delivering life-skills workshops fortnightly upskilling out coaches to share life skills every coaching session at school. Central to the coaches’ code of ethics.
- Adidas deliver 700 pairs of sports shoes through the work of the amazing Lutz van Dijk
Lutz van Dijk runs the NGO HOKISA, fighting aids and has been in Masiphumelele for 17 years and is a long time friend of Masicorp. Lutz arranged with Adidas to deliver 700 pairs of sports shoes to both Masiphumelele High School and Ukhanyo Primary School. Both Headmasters. Mr Nelson Mafrika and Mr Michael Tyhali were on hand to receive this great gift.
- The headmaster and head coach invited to the WPCC box at Newlands
Michael and Nceba watched India beat the Proteas in the Newlands ODI – WPCC are generous donors to the 750 Club. It was a special day for them as it was the first time they had watched a match at Newlands.
- Ukhanyo school athletics day a huge success
Nceba Jonas and the staff organized an inter house sports day in Masiphumelele. All staff and learners participated in the cheering, organizing and running. The school was alive with excitement.
The Ukhanyo athletics team participated in the South Education Primary School Athletic Championship for all schools in the South held at Zwaanswyk School. They performed with great courage and determination.
Five of our top athletes went through to the South District Athletics trial.
- Ukhanyo host the under 13 south district cricket nets
Ukhanyo were privileged to host the under 13 South District cricket nets as part of the WPCA talent Identification project. We hosted Sun Valley and Bay Primary school cricketers with the five Ukhanyo cricketers.
Ntlahla (Lucky) was chosen for the south district under 13 trial match and performed very well
