Unlocking English Literacy: The Power of Active Learning for Young Learners with Masicorp
At Masicorp, we believe that every child deserves access to quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances. That’s why we’re proud to share one of our impactful initiatives, The English Hub, which is vital in improving English literacy at Masiphumelele‘s Ukhanyo Primary School.
Addressing the Challenge: One of the major challenges faced by Ukhanyo Primary School is the low level of English literacy among students. Recognizing this hurdle, Masicorp established The English Hub in January 2012. Inspired by the success of our Science Lab, this initiative focuses on equipping teachers with the skills and resources needed to teach English effectively.
Empowering Teachers and Students: The English Hub serves as a vibrant learning environment, where 261 learners and 6 teachers from Grade 3 benefit from specialized training and support. Through dynamic teaching methods and access to a well-stocked library, teachers are empowered to engage students in active learning experiences. Renovated to be bright, inviting, and conducive to participation, the classroom fosters a sense of fun and enthusiasm for learning.
Supporting Early Literacy: Our Masifunde initiative compliments The English Hub by nurturing English language skills in the early stages of primary education. Initial teaching is conducted in Xhosa, students transition to English instruction in later years. This shift can be challenging, which is why we provide support by offering teaching materials and guidance to our dedicated volunteers.
A Path to Success: Through the English Hub and Masifunde initiatives, Masicorp is paving the way for success in English literacy at Ukhanyo Primary School. By emphasizing active learning, providing essential resources, and fostering a supportive learning environment, we’re breaking the barriers and empowering students to thrive academically and beyond.
Jane Futter a qualified remedial teacher is the head of the Masifunde Literacy Programme
She shares her experience with us:
‘’Twelve years ago I fell in love with the children of Ukhanyo Primary School. They are sweet, smiling, and friendly. For many of them, the Masifunde Literacy Programme is their first experience of “sharing” books, talking about the stories, and looking at the pictures together. They missed out on this as toddlers and preschoolers, and now aged 9-13 years, they are eagerly embracing the opportunity.
There is never a dull moment in our Masifunde classes. From reciting Action Rhymes, where many of the learners show real acting talent, to learning to write their own stories, the children participate actively for the full 45 minutes.
With such an abundance of joy and pleasure in every lesson, teaching these children has to be the most rewarding way to spend one’s retirement!”
As we celebrate World Book Day on the 23rd of April 2024, we recognize the transformative impact of initiatives like The English Hub & the Masifunde Literacy Programme in unlocking the potential of every child through the power of literacy.
Together, we’re building a brighter future, one word at a time.
