Connections to a future – Masiphumelele High School Careers Day
Leaving school and entering the workforce can be daunting – especially today, where youth face a world with limitless opportunities and choices that shape their careers and futures.
Career guidance in Masiphumelele is rare. Youth in Masi often lack the resources and access to a platform to prepare for their future. The Masicorp Pathways programme launched in 2019 aimed to address these types of challenges.
On the 26 & 27th of May 2022, Ikamva Youth in partnership with Masicorp held career guidance workshops that spoke to Masi High students about life after matric. The key message was for learners to create their own vision boards and work hard towards their goals. They also heard about the persistence needed to propel them towards success.
The panellists who spoke to the matric class of Masiphumelele High School consisted of six Masiphumelele Branch Alumni from Ikamva Youth. These included two hosts – Aphiwe Sobutyu and Sihle Sosanti. Guest speakers included Zuki Lamani (social media influencer), Sanele Bani (chef), Zintle Magazi (researcher), Lubabalo Peter (librarian), Someleze Jabe (Stellenbosch student) and Ayabulela Pali (public management graduate). They spoke to the matric class of 2022 about university requirements, the corporate world and the importance of choosing the correct career path that will define the future.
This was a very important career guidance day in Masiphumelele as school leavers learnt a lot of useful information and the learners had many questions for the speakers about life after school and how to make a success of yourself. The optimism and excitement for the future could be felt in the quad with minds buzzing at the thought of exciting career paths that are ahead of them.
Thank you to Ikamva Youth Masiphumelele Branch for hosting this wonderful event in partnership with Masicorp. It enlightened the matric learners of Masi High School. The information was well-received by all who attended, and we could see how much it meant to the learners that we take their future seriously because they are tomorrow’s leaders.
