2009 - Library Extension Ground-breaking ceremony

Cape Times 20th March 2009

From Jo-Anne Smetherham's article in the Cape Times:

Local ward councillor Felicity Purchase hailed the library American-backed organisation Masicorp funded as "a perfect example of how things can work in our townships if we have the co-operation of the extended communities".

Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for the extension on Tuesday, she said the city did not have the funds to provide facilities like the library in every area. "The demands are huge, and growing all the time," she said.

There were speeches from Local ward councilor Felicity Purchase, as quoted above, and Trevor Tyers of the Newlands Rotary group. The Rotary Club will be providing project management services for the construction of Library extension.

As this was John and Carol Thompson's last 'official' engagement before they start their new roles in Masicorp, the volunteers presented them with a tree of good wishes and a commemorative plaque.
